User Exodus from X
The day after the election on November 6, X saw its largest user exodus since Elon Musk’s acquisition in 2022, with users flocking to alternatives like Bluesky and Instagram’s Threads. Numbers continue to rise as more users and notable brands, such as The Guardian and Don Lemon, leave the platform.

Sampling interviews of six individuals who have transitioned to Threads and Bluesky, citing issues on X, like bots, partisan ads, and harassment. These problems intensified with Donald Trump’s election win, supported by Musk, who has since been actively engaging with Trump on his transition.
CryptoCaster Quick Check:
Kara Wurtz, a 39-year-old finance director from St. Louis, described November 6 as the “final straw” after using Twitter for eight years. Under Musk’s ownership, she felt the platform no longer provided value, adding, “Every time I opened it, it would throw things at me that put me in a bad mood.”
Wurtz noticed an increase in offensive content the night of the election and decided to leave. She primarily used X for local news and politics and has since moved to Threads, where she’s starting to see familiar faces joining her community.
Bluesky’s user base surged, with over 1 million new sign-ups in a week, bringing the total to 15 million. Threads, too, saw growth, with Instagram head Adam Mosseri announcing over 275 million monthly active users on November 3, including 15 million new sign-ups in November alone.
Similarweb data indicates that Bluesky’s daily traffic surpassed Threads’ on November 6. A Bluesky representative mentioned that the majority of new users are from the U.S., Canada, and the UK, adding, “We’re excited to welcome new communities, from Swifties to city planners.”
Fan communities are also driving the migration. Noëlle Polo, a Taylor Swift fan account runner, noted a significant shift of Swifties from X to Bluesky. Polo prefers Bluesky over Threads for privacy reasons, as her public Swift account remains separate from her private Instagram.
Rory Mir from the Electronic Frontier Foundation emphasized the importance of who controls social platforms. Mir believes that X has deteriorated in quality, saying, “People don’t feel like the right voices are being heard or promoted. They don’t feel safe.”
For content creators, deciding whether to leave X is difficult. José Vilson, an educator and author, acknowledges the impact X had on his career, saying he’ll post less but won’t delete his account unless absolutely necessary. Laura Sell of Duke University Press also struggles to leave X despite growth on Bluesky and Threads.
X’s new terms of service, effective Friday, state that user content can be used for AI training. Users can opt out in settings, but this change has spurred concerns about content misuse. Some may choose to delete posts or deactivate accounts.
Deleting posts comes with challenges. Privacy advocate Micah Lee is developing a new service, Cyd, to help users delete content across platforms, but cautions about potential risks, such as others impersonating them if handles become available.
Dr. Jorge Caballero, a public health communicator, has left X for good after the election, using Bluesky full-time. He finds value in Bluesky’s community of journalists and advocates, stating, “It has enough of the people needed to effect change and inform the public. So far, it’s just right.”
