According to a January 7 report by 404 Media, Telegram provided IP addresses and/or phone numbers in response to 14 U.S. requests between January 1 and September 30, 2024. However, the platform reportedly fulfilled 900 requests in total for the year, impacting 2,253 users, suggesting a dramatic increase in inquiries after October.

On August 24, French authorities detained Durov amid allegations that Telegram was being used to facilitate criminal activity. In October, Durov acknowledged that Telegram had been sharing IP addresses and phone numbers of suspected criminals with authorities globally since 2018, a practice outlined in the platform’s privacy policy.
French authorities have restricted Durov from leaving the country as the legal proceedings remain ongoing at the time of publication. In September, the CEO reported that Telegram had surpassed 950 million monthly active users, with many in the crypto industry favoring the app for its end-to-end encryption features.
