By donating solar reading lamps, the project addresses a significant challenge faced by children in rural African communities without electricity. These lamps enable students to study at night, offering them better educational opportunities. The initiative began in February 2024, delivering 2,500 solar lamps to 25 schools in Nigeria. By October 2024, an additional 7,200 lamps reached communities across Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and Ghana, benefiting thousands more.
During the ceremony in Ghana, Dr. Anita Nana Okuribido of the Smiling Simon Greenbuild Foundation expressed heartfelt appreciation to KuCoin. She explained that prior to this initiative, children relied on candles or moonlight for evening studies. The solar lamps have transformed their learning environment, with each lamp impacting at least five students. In total, the project has positively affected 36,000 children, giving them access to brighter educational opportunities.
Zhao Jing, Chairman of Global CSR, praised the project for reigniting a passion for learning among African children. He emphasized that the initiative is more than a material contribution; it serves as a profound source of motivation and hope for a brighter future.
KuCoin state that it remains committed to sustainable development, particularly in education, health, and climate change. Nancy Cheung, KuCoin’s Chief Sustainability Officer, described the “Light Up Africa” project as a significant milestone in the company’s efforts to support the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals. KuCoin intends to continue its focus on children’s education and innovation, driving positive societal change for years to come.
