On March 1, Kent Police issued a public alert, warning residents about the surge in crypto fraud. The scammers gained unauthorized access to victims’ private information and used it to fabricate fraudulent reports under the name of Action Fraud, the United Kingdom’s official cybercrime reporting center.
CryptoCaster Quick Check:
“Personal details were extracted from the data leak and exploited to create fake Action Fraud reports,” Kent Police confirmed.
By falsifying reports, the fraudsters impersonated law enforcement officials and reached out to unsuspecting victims. They falsely claimed the individuals were under investigation and would soon be contacted by a so-called “crypto wallet provider.”
Kent Police Warns Crypto Investors Amid Rising Scam Tactics
Detective Sergeant Darryll Paulson cautioned Kent residents against sharing personal information over the phone with anyone claiming to be law enforcement or a cryptocurrency service provider.
“Scammers are becoming increasingly calculated in their tactics, preying on victims by creating a false sense of urgency—often claiming immediate action is needed to prevent funds from being stolen,” Paulson warned.
Mitigating the Impact of the Data Leak
The fraudulent scheme, which originated from a data breach, resulted in over $1.2 million in losses for nine victims. Authorities are urging affected individuals to come forward without fear or embarrassment, emphasizing that even a brief lapse in attention can make someone vulnerable to fraud.
To safeguard digital assets, crypto investors should never share their seed phrases, as doing so grants full access to funds, allowing scammers to transfer or withdraw them instantly.
