Memecoins emerged as the dominant crypto narrative of 2024, capturing 14% of global investor interest, according to a recently published report by Coingecko. Beyond the overarching meme coin trend, four specific subcategories of meme coins also secured spots among the top 20 crypto narratives.

The report highlighted that Solana meme coins ranked fourth, attracting 7.7% of global investor interest. Meanwhile, Base meme coins, AI meme coins, and Cat meme coins secured the 11th, 15th, and 16th positions, garnering 2.1%, 1.5%, and 1.2% of investor interest, respectively.

Collectively, these trends brought total memecoin-related interest to nearly 31%, accounting for roughly one-third of the year’s overall crypto narrative engagement. This marks a significant leap from 2023, when memecoins ranked third in Coingecko’s most popular crypto narratives, capturing just 8.3% of interest.
“The analysis assessed global web traffic data for Coingecko categories, excluding bot activity, from January 1 to December 21 for both 2023 and 2024,” explained Lim Yu Qian, a Crypto Research Analyst at Coingecko. “Only categories with listed pages and a measurable share of traffic were included in the study,” she added.
Solana Memecoins Steal the Spotlight in 2024
Solana-related narratives accounted for 14% of global investor interest in 2024, with memecoins emerging as the primary driver of attention toward the blockchain. Notably, Pumpfun, Solana’s leading memecoin launchpad, played a significant role, contributing 0.6% to the overall interest.
Pumpfun has achieved remarkable milestones within a year of its launch. It recently became the first decentralized application (dApp) on Solana to surpass $100 million in monthly revenue, with an impressive $1.06 billion in annual revenue, according to data from DeFiLlama.
Beyond memecoins, other key crypto narratives also made waves in the top ten. These included Artificial Intelligence (AI) with 12.58%, Real-World Assets (RWA) at 8.64%, the broader Solana ecosystem with 5.78%, and Gaming at 3.72%.
